Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) continue to be an important source of morbidity for children with cancer and those undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplant. As many institutions strive to achieve rates of zero, nurses need to be aware of distinct challenges involving the pediatric hematology/oncology/transplant population. Nurses also need to be knowledgeable of current evidence guiding the management of children with central venous catheters. Evidence is emerging in relation to the pathophysiology of bloodstream infections, particularly those meeting mucosal barrier injury classification. Within the past two years, evidence regarding the role of prophylactic antibiotics to reduce the risk of bacterial infections in high risk patients has also been developing. As these practices are adopted, facilities need to be prepared to evaluate both their effectiveness and potential safety implications. This course will provide an overview of CLABSIs in the pediatric hem/onc/transplant population with attention to the growing body of evidence related to causal factors and strategies to reduce CLABSIs. The course will also emphasize nursing responsibilities related to CLABSI reduction at the individual, unit, and organization level.
